Zion National Park — Adventure Days
42.6 mi · ~45 min from basecamp via US-89 & UT-9
Towering red rock canyons, the Virgin River, hanging gardens, and some of the most unique hikes in the world. Take the East Entrance via the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway for switchbacks, a tunnel, and great photo stops. Stop at the Visitor Center for maps and ranger advice. Summer heat can hit 100°F — hydration is non-negotiable. 🌤️ Best time: late spring or early fall. Summer is hot and busy; winter has fewer people but possible icy conditions.
⚠️ Always check flash flood risk and water flow before you go — the Narrows closes when the Virgin River exceeds 150 CFS. Below 50 CFS is ideal for families. Wear waterproof sandals or closed-toe shoes + neoprene socks. Rent walking sticks from Zion Adventures or bring a trekking pole. Pack a dry shirt — wet tops get cold on the shuttle home. No bathrooms after the trailhead.
The NOAA Virgin River flow graph shows real-time CFS and lets you predict future levels based on upcoming weather — the most reliable tool for planning your Narrows day. After opening, change the display from Graph to Flow for the clearest read.
🔗 NOAA Virgin River Flow Graph →🌲 Spot the Little Lonely Tree — keep your eyes open along the trail for a single scraggly pine clinging to the sandstone ledge, all by itself against the canyon backdrop. Easy to miss, impossible to forget once you see it.
Keyhole Canyon — Short technical slot with swims and rappels · ~2 hrs · Very popular · Permit required · Check flash flood risk before entry — this canyon drains fast and floods without warning
Archeology Trail — 0.5 mi right behind the Visitor Center · Good 20-min stretch of the legs
The Grotto Trail — 1 mi flat, shaded path connecting the Lodge to The Grotto · Wild turkeys and deer frequent this one
Clear Creek (East Side) — Drop into the wash off Hwy 9 · Small slots and hoodoos · Almost no crowds
Checkerboard Mesa — On the East Entrance drive · Great photo stop, no hike required
Many Pools — East side · Scramble tiered sandstone pools carved by runoff · Best after rain
The Subway — Zion's most stunning slot canyon · Permit + technical gear required
Bryce Canyon National Park — Scenic Days
39.7 mi · ~40 min from basecamp via US-89 & UT-12
Hoodoos, sunrises that transform the landscape, and one of the great moderate hikes in the Southwest. Many people say it's even more beautiful than the Grand Canyon. Bring layers — it's 7,764 ft up here with bigger temperature swings than Zion. You can drive your own car, and parking is generally easier. 🌤️ Best time: early fall or late spring. Summer: 70s–80s°F with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Winter: snow-capped hoodoos, no crowds, but icy trails.
Rim Trail — Easy 0.5-mi paved section (wheelchair accessible). Full trail = 5.5 mi.
Mossy Cave — Best sunset spot · West-facing wall with waterfall and mossy overhang.
Fairyland Loop — 8 mi, strenuous. Far fewer crowds than the main amphitheater.
Old Bryce Town — Ice cream, candy shop, rock shop, jail photo ops. Great for kids.
One of the stranger, better things you can do at Bryce — hike below the rim while the full moon turns the hoodoos silver. A park ranger leads the way; no headlamps unless they say so (it wrecks everyone's night vision). The route changes each month — could be a gentle rim walk, could be a steep descent into the amphitheater. You won't know until that night. Lug-sole boots required; sandals will get you turned away.
How to get a spot: Only 25 hikers per hike. Tickets drop on Recreation.gov in two waves — 15 tickets at 8 AM Mountain, 14 days out; 10 more at 8 AM Mountain, 5 days out. First-come, first-served. Set a calendar reminder and be online at 8:00 AM sharp — these go fast. Max 6 tickets per reservation. Free with park admission + $1 processing fee.
Day of: Check in at the Visitor Center front desk during normal hours to find out where and when to meet. Be at the trailhead 10 minutes early — if the rangers have left, you've missed it. → See our dark sky guide for moon phase timing
