Zion National Park — Adventure Days

42.6 mi · ~45 min from basecamp via US-89 & UT-9

Towering red rock canyons, the Virgin River, hanging gardens, and some of the most unique hikes in the world. Take the East Entrance via the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway for switchbacks, a tunnel, and great photo stops. Stop at the Visitor Center for maps and ranger advice. Summer heat can hit 100°F — hydration is non-negotiable. 🌤️ Best time: late spring or early fall. Summer is hot and busy; winter has fewer people but possible icy conditions.

Zion East Entrance42.6 mi · ~45 min from basecamp
Springdale / Visitor Center~70 min from basecamp via East Entrance
Shuttle SeasonMar 7 – Nov 28, 2026 · Park shuttle first bus 7 AM · Town shuttle from Springdale 8 AM · Arrive before 8 AM
Kolob Canyons~1 hr 20 min · Quieter, separate entrance
Pro TipLots fill fast — before 8 AM recommended
⭐ The Narrows — Riverside Walk
Moderate Up to 9.4 mi Family Friendly Main Pick
Shuttle to Temple of Sinawava → 2-mile paved Riverside Walk → enter the Virgin River. Towering 1,000 ft canyon walls on both sides. Toddlers and grandparents can stick with the riverwalk; adults choose how far in to go.
Choose your turnaround
Easy 0.5–1 mi in river · All levels, ankle to knee deep
Moderate Mystery Falls · ~2 mi RT, stunning side waterfall
Harder Orderville Canyon · ~6 mi RT, narrow slot section
Full Day Big Springs · ~10 mi, the full experience

⚠️ Always check flash flood risk and water flow before you go — the Narrows closes when the Virgin River exceeds 150 CFS. Below 50 CFS is ideal for families. Wear waterproof sandals or closed-toe shoes + neoprene socks. Rent walking sticks from Zion Adventures or bring a trekking pole. Pack a dry shirt — wet tops get cold on the shuttle home. No bathrooms after the trailhead.

Angels Landing ⛰️
Hard 5 mi RT · 1,630 ft gain Permit Required
Steep climb ending with chains and sheer drop-offs. Not for young kids or fear of heights. Jaw-dropping 360° views at the top. Permit required year-round past Scout Lookout — enter the seasonal lottery on Recreation.gov well in advance, or try the day-before lottery. Only ~47% of applicants get one.
Emerald Pools Trail
Easy–Mod 1–2.6 mi Family Friendly
1–2.6 mi triangle, paved. Walk under a misting waterfall surrounded by sheer red walls. Head to Upper Pools for the best views. Shaded sections help in heat — good for all ages.
Canyon Overlook Trail
Easy 1 mi RT Family Friendly
Easy 1 mi with one of the best views in the park. Right on the East Entrance drive — perfect on arrival day or heading out. Parking fills fast.

🌲 Spot the Little Lonely Tree — keep your eyes open along the trail for a single scraggly pine clinging to the sandstone ledge, all by itself against the canyon backdrop. Easy to miss, impossible to forget once you see it.

East Rim Trail — Jolley Gulch Viewpoint 🏜️
Moderate 5.8 mi RT · ~600 ft gain Low Crowds
Trailhead right off Hwy 9 at the East Entrance. Sandy wash, Cave Canyon climb, Checkerboard Mesa views, then a sheer 300-ft drop into Jolley Gulch at the turnaround. Pristine solitude at Zion's quiet east side.
Observation Point — East Mesa Trail 👁️
Moderate 7 mi RT · ~700 ft gain Best Canyon View
Zion's highest viewpoint — 2,000 ft above the canyon floor, Angels Landing looking tiny below you. Mostly flat through ponderosa pines, with the full canyon panorama saving itself for the final steps.
Watchman Trail 🌄
Moderate 3.1 mi RT · 368 ft gain No Shuttle Needed
Starts right at the Visitor Center — no shuttle required. The trail sits in the shadow of the canyon walls in the afternoon, keeping it cool. Ends with a stunning panoramic view of Watchman Peak and the southern park entrance.
Weeping Rock 💧
Easy 0.4 mi RT · 100 ft gain
Short and steep — ends in a massive alcove where water weeps from the ceiling and hanging gardens cling to the walls. A Zion classic and a great way to cool off in summer.
Kayenta Trail 🦎
Moderate 2 mi RT · 150 ft gain
The connector trail most people skip. Take the shuttle to The Grotto (Stop 6), cross the footbridge, and take Kayenta up to the Emerald Pools — better views of the Virgin River than the standard lower-pool path.
Sand Bench Trail 🐎
Moderate 7.6 mi loop · 466 ft gain
The primary trail for commercial horse trips — offers a totally different perspective of the Court of the Patriarchs. Very sandy underfoot but completely different scenery from the main canyon trails.
Hidden Canyon 🧗 (Currently Closed)
Strenuous 2.5 mi RT · 850 ft gain
Like a mini Angels Landing without the permit — cliff-side chains and a hidden hanging canyon at the end. Closed long-term due to a major rockfall, but it's the #1 trail people ask about once they've done the others.
🪢 Canyoneering — Zion
Technical Permit Required
Pine Creek Canyon — One of Zion's best intro canyoneering routes · Rappels up to 60 ft into a beautiful slot · Half-day · Permit required · Gear rentals available in Springdale

Keyhole Canyon — Short technical slot with swims and rappels · ~2 hrs · Very popular · Permit required · Check flash flood risk before entry — this canyon drains fast and floods without warning
🚴 Zion Canyon Scenic Drive — Bike
Moderate 15 mi RT · 300 ft gain Must-Do
Bikes share the 7-mile Scenic Drive with only the park shuttle (Mar–Nov). Start on the Pa'rus Trail from the Visitor Center, then ride all the way to the Temple of Sinawava. Pull completely over when a shuttle approaches from behind.
Full biking guide →
⚡ Zion Canyon E-Bike
Easy 42.6 mi away Family Friendly
No shuttle lines, no sweat — just canyon walls. Rent from Zion Peddler (0.4 mi from the park entrance). Park there and ride straight in on the Pa'rus Trail then up the Scenic Drive to Temple of Sinawava. With pedal assist, anyone handles the climb. Book ahead in peak season.

Bryce Canyon National Park — Scenic Days

39.7 mi · ~40 min from basecamp via US-89 & UT-12

Hoodoos, sunrises that transform the landscape, and one of the great moderate hikes in the Southwest. Many people say it's even more beautiful than the Grand Canyon. Bring layers — it's 7,764 ft up here with bigger temperature swings than Zion. You can drive your own car, and parking is generally easier. 🌤️ Best time: early fall or late spring. Summer: 70s–80s°F with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Winter: snow-capped hoodoos, no crowds, but icy trails.

Bryce Canyon39.7 mi · ~40 min from basecamp
Mossy Cave~35 min · Best sunset spot · Before the main entrance
Shuttle SeasonApr 3 – Oct 18, 2026 · 8 AM–8 PM peak · Amphitheater only — Scenic Drive requires your own car
Elevation7,764 ft · Much cooler than Zion · Bring layers
🌅 Sunrise at the Rim
Start Here Sunrise · Sunset · Bryce Point
Watch the light transform the hoodoos — easily one of the best sunrises anywhere. The orange and pink tones on the rock formations at first light are genuinely something else. Arrive early — cold but incredible lighting.
⭐ Queens Garden + Navajo Loop
Moderate ~3–4 mi · or Figure 8 at 6.4 mi Best Hike
Start at Sunset Point. Descend via Navajo Loop through Wall Street — dense towering hoodoos like skyscrapers with steep switchbacks. Connect to Queens Garden Trail (descends 320 ft past Queen Victoria, Queen's Castle, and Gulliver's Castle). Climb back out. Figure 8 (6.4 mi): Descend Queen's Garden from Sunrise Point, connect to the Peekaboo Loop and hike it clockwise, then ascend via Navajo Loop (use Two Bridges side in winter). Finish by hiking back to Sunrise Point along the Rim Trail.
Southern Scenic Drive
Car-Friendly 18 miles · Allow 2–3 hrs
Drive to the southern end first, then stop at viewpoints on the way back — avoids left turns across oncoming traffic. Shuttle doesn't reach here; you need your own car.
🌉 Natural Bridge — most popular stop
🌲 Rainbow Point + 1-mile Bristlecone Pine Trail
🏜️ Ponderosa Canyon — red hoodoos + pine trees
🐇 Agua Canyon — White Rabbit & Hunter formations
More Bryce Options
All Levels
Tower Bridge — 3.4 mi RT, moderate. Ends at a striking natural rock bridge.
Rim Trail — Easy 0.5-mi paved section (wheelchair accessible). Full trail = 5.5 mi.
Mossy Cave — Best sunset spot · West-facing wall with waterfall and mossy overhang.
Fairyland Loop — 8 mi, strenuous. Far fewer crowds than the main amphitheater.
Old Bryce Town — Ice cream, candy shop, rock shop, jail photo ops. Great for kids.
🌕 Ranger Full Moon Hike — Bryce Canyon Once a Month 1–2 mi · 2–3 hrs · Ages 8+

One of the stranger, better things you can do at Bryce — hike below the rim while the full moon turns the hoodoos silver. A park ranger leads the way; no headlamps unless they say so (it wrecks everyone's night vision). The route changes each month — could be a gentle rim walk, could be a steep descent into the amphitheater. You won't know until that night. Lug-sole boots required; sandals will get you turned away.

How to get a spot: Only 25 hikers per hike. Tickets drop on Recreation.gov in two waves — 15 tickets at 8 AM Mountain, 14 days out; 10 more at 8 AM Mountain, 5 days out. First-come, first-served. Set a calendar reminder and be online at 8:00 AM sharp — these go fast. Max 6 tickets per reservation. Free with park admission + $1 processing fee.

Day of: Check in at the Visitor Center front desk during normal hours to find out where and when to meet. Be at the trailhead 10 minutes early — if the rangers have left, you've missed it. → See our dark sky guide for moon phase timing

The Golden Rules

Final strategy

1 · Alternate hard & easy days
Your body will thank you. Never do Zion and Bryce back to back.
2 · Start early
Before 8 AM at the parks whenever possible. Lots fill, shuttles crowd, trails heat up.
3 · Stay flexible
Weather, conditions, and energy change plans. That's fine — this region rewards improvisation.
4 · Don't try to do everything
Pick your highlights and own them. One great hike beats three rushed ones.
5 · Know where to eat
Good food after a big day matters. Check our restaurant guide for the best spots near Bryce Canyon and Zion.
